Transforming B2B Healthcare E-Commerce in Indonesia through Medbiz

Overview#

Medbiz is a B2B e-commerce platform revolutionizing Indonesia’s healthcare supply chain, enabling thousands of pharmacy business owners to order from major distributors and state-owned enterprises with ease. Built for scale and reliability, Medbiz connects sellers, distributors, and buyers across the country with real-time inventory, seamless ordering, and a powerful seller management portal.

Key Features#

  • Scalable B2B Marketplace: Supports thousands of pharmacies, state-owned sellers, and distributors with role-based portals for product, order, and inventory management.
  • Real-Time Product Updates: Uses RabbitMQ and microservices to efficiently process high-volume product updates—ensuring up-to-date inventory without overloading the system.
  • Omnichannel Experience: Built with Next.js for responsive web and mobile app access, delivering a unified experience to both buyers and sellers.
  • Advanced Search and Discovery: Integrates Elasticsearch for fast, accurate product and inventory search—even across massive catalogues.
  • Order Management System: Swift OMS powers seller operations, order routing, fulfillment, and reporting in a centralized dashboard.
  • Robust Integration: Leverages GCP for scalability and resilience, MySQL for transactional data, and Buildkite for automated CI/CD pipelines.

Technologies Used#

  • Adobe Commerce (Magento Enterprise): Core B2B platform.
  • Next.js: Frontend for web and mobile.
  • Elasticsearch: Fast product and inventory search.
  • RabbitMQ: Reliable, asynchronous queueing for product and order updates.
  • Swift OMS: Seller portal and order management.
  • Google Cloud Platform (GCP): Cloud infrastructure and scalability.
  • MySQL: Primary relational database.
  • Buildkite: CI/CD automation for deployment.

Challenges and Learnings#

Coordinating a fast-growing, cross-functional team of 20+ engineers, we established a scalable “captain” system—appointing three lead engineers to oversee different modules, manage code reviews, and accelerate delivery alongside a PM, Scrum Master, and 10 QA engineers. This approach enabled us to meet tight deadlines and keep quality high in a complex, multi-stakeholder project.

Handling real-time product updates for state-owned sellers with huge catalogs was a major technical challenge. Processing updates concurrently risked system overload, so we architected a robust queuing system with RabbitMQ, balancing reliability and eventual consistency—delivering smooth, crash-free updates even at massive scale.

During development, I also detected and resolved a critical race condition in sales order processing involving full reward point redemption, preventing potential revenue loss and protecting transaction integrity for all users.

Outcome#

Medbiz now powers seamless transactions and inventory management for thousands of pharmacies and major healthcare suppliers across Indonesia. The platform’s scalable architecture and robust operational model enable efficient, reliable e-commerce in a sector with zero margin for error. This project sharpened my skills in large-team leadership, system scalability, and B2B platform design.
